Switzerland Temporarily Shuts Embassy in Iran
In a formal statement, the ministry explained that the ambassador to Iran, Olivier Bangerter, along with five other Swiss staff members, exited the country overland and are "now safely outside Iran."
The statement highlighted, "Due to the attacks by the US and Israel against Iran and Iran's attacks on various countries in the Middle East, the security of staff at the Swiss embassy in Tehran can no longer be guaranteed."
The readout noted that four Swiss employees had already departed on March 3, while the remaining six personnel, including the ambassador, left on Wednesday.
"They will return to Tehran as soon as the situation allows," the ministry confirmed.
Although the embassy is closed, Switzerland emphasized that it will persist in its intermediary function between Washington and Tehran. "As part of its good offices, Switzerland will continue to maintain an open line of communication between the United States and Iran, in consultation with the two countries."
The Swiss mission also handles consular services for US citizens residing in or visiting Iran.
The statement further noted that both the US and Iran were notified about the embassy’s temporary closure and the departure of the staff.
